Stepping into a PORTAL to the early 2000's

By Mia Zajac

Hello everyone! This week we’re talking all about our Middle School emo queen Melanie Martinez. She has FINALLY made her comeback with her album PORTALS which was released on March 31st, 2023.

Background on Melanie, if you didn’t have a Melanie Martinez faze in middle school, she’s an American singer-songwriter from NYC who became popular due to starring on The Voice in 2012 and then releasing her debut single ‘Dollhouse’ then with her debut album titled Cry Baby.

Safe to say I was SO EXCITED that she had finally decided to release new music. Thank god she had stuck with her normal genre of music. I was obviously open to her diving into anything but she barely segwayed away from her normal sound and I am obsessed with that.

My stand-out song from the album is ‘VOID’. Right off the bat, I felt like I was thrown into the 2000s Sk8r Boi era. There was a pop-punk feel of that era and I have actually been so obsessed with that music currently so I’m happy she’s been on the same page. Also, my first thought was that she kinda sounded like Selena Gomez. I have no clue why I thought that but I felt it deserved a mention because I am convinced Selena is the love of my life. ‘VOID’ is the second song on the album after the first titled ‘DEATH’.

Now for ‘DEATH’ it is the absolute PERFECT opening song. She’s basically saying how she’s back and is ready to slay some more. It’s actually so real of her because I would do the same??? There was nothing that stood out as much as that in this song and that’s why it gets a nice mention.

‘TUNNEL VISION’ is my last stand out. It’s exactly the sound I thought the album would have. The beginning has a siren song feel which goes hand and hand with the mystical theme of the album. I love it so much. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Then with the name ‘TUNNEL VISION’ I feel as if it goes hand-in-hand with that siren idea because that’s the whole point of sirens, they would make sailors only focus on them and then ultimately lead themselves to their demise. I know that she had to have this in mind with this song and I think it’s genius. Lyric wise it does allude to the siren theme I have seen (especially with the seagull sounds included in the end), but also it’s about being used and her seeing through that. This has to be one of my top songs on the album.

This album is genuinely more than I could’ve hoped for. It’s whimsical and dark just what you would expect from her and a comeback. I highly suggest giving it a listen and try to rank the songs because it’s actually the hardest thing I’ve almost ever had to do in my entire life.

Thanks so much for reading this week and see you next Wednesday!
