Quarters of Change(ing) my Music Taste (slowly)

By Mia Zajac

If you’ve been here before you know I’m obsessed when bands truly care about their fans. Not just a someone get her water she’s passed out on the ground care about their fans but a, hey let me make sure everyone here has a good time and we actually really love you! Basically, I love when musicians truly appreciate their fans. Fans are the reason artists get big and are able to do what they do. If people weren’t fans of Harry Styles his shows would be empty, he wouldn’t have a career, and he would probably still be baking bread in Holmes Chapel (nothing wrong with being a baker to all you bakers out there). What I’m saying is no matter how much talent and hard work artists put in they have to have a fan base and it’s always a plus when they appreciate said fan base.

Quarters of Change has that.

Left to right: Ben Acker, Ben Roter, Atilla Anrather, Mark (their bassist), and Jasper Harris

They’re an alternative rock band local to New York City composed of Ben Roter on guitar and lead vocals, Attila Anrather on drums, Jasper Harris on guitar/bass, and Ben Acker on guitar/bass as well.

I attended their February 24th show in Boston at the Brighton Music Hall for their Deluxe Tour.

To preface, I have never heard of them until my friend Alina, who I met at a concert (obviously a Sun Room one because typical), texted me and asked if I wanted to go. It’s a concert and I’m a concert person so there was absolutely no way I was going to say no, duh. I had no clue who they were so I had to basically listen to them every single day from February 3rd to the 24th, to do my homework if you will.

Their sound is very much a punk rockish vibe, Alina had described it best: they’re the 1975 and Ben Roter is her Matty Healy (the way that I’ve never heard a more accurate statement in my life).

We got into the line an hour and a half before the doors opened which was wild for me considering how bad concert camping has gotten and we still got barricade because, obviously.

Then (as I always do) we met some other fans at the barricade and they talked all about how they’d been into QOC for a hot minute. I always love getting to speak to veteran fans, it really gives me some insight into what kind of artist I’m seeing. We even met someone who was put on their LIST just because she tweeted about needing a ticket since she couldn’t find one that wasn’t 100+. That was the turning point where I was like ‘wait ok, that’s actually really generous for them to do that.’

Barricade slay (shout out to the hot photographer who took this)

I’m going to be so real right now, I honestly didn’t catch onto any of the song lyrics within those twenty days BUT that didn’t stop me from having a really good time. The crowd was energetic and really hype for them and was hype for the opener, Late Night Drive Home, too. I love when a crowd can appreciate the opener, it really tells you something about the artist's fan base as a whole.

Overall, I had a great experience at their show! I definitely lost some of my hearing but when your ears are ringing afterward you know it was good. I highly suggest giving Quarters of Change a listen, even if you end up not enjoying their music or something lame like that, they deserve credit for just being grounded artists. They obviously care for their fans and appreciate them which is my #1 importance when getting into musical artists, those types of musicians deserve the most.

My top Quarters of Change song's are Jaded, Kiwi, and Chloe so go give them a listen and tell me what you think!
