I know everyone’s so excited for, you guessed it, another (emphasis on another because this is #3 and counting) Sun Room post! Let's all give me a round of applause for being the most predictable person ever, at this point it’s free marketing for them what can I say? Anyway if you’re new here this is a crash course in Sun Room. Sun Room is a band based out of San Diego California composed of Luke Asgian on lead vocals and guitar, Max Pinamonti on bass, Ashton Minnich on guitar, and Gibson Anderson (context; last post I had absolutely no clue what his full name was like it was hard to find. It was not. I literally follow him on Tik Tok and his full name is in his bio. I'm just absolutely dense sometimes) on drums.
They have just released their EP “Outta Their Minds” and I am so excited to tell you guys about it! The Ep was released Friday, February 24th, 2023. My first listen to it was at our college bar which I do NOT recommend but I did it anyway. Of course, I had to have a real listen after the night out and talk about it with my other Sun Room friends, Alina…. Literally just Alina.
The EP is made up of four songs; ‘Cadilac’, ‘Kaden’s Van’, ‘Sunset Garage’, and ‘Outta Their Minds’. At first, I was a little bit underwhelmed with the number of songs we got, of course, it’s quality over quantity but I do think we were expecting more songs considering there were two singles but only four songs on the EP. Single wise, I do understand the idea behind ‘Cadilac’ and ‘Kaden’s Van’ being singles as they both accurately represent either side of the EP. Releasing just ‘Cadilac’ as a single would’ve made me think ‘ok the EP is just 60s rock got it’ and if they released ‘Kaden’s Van’ I would think ‘ok the EP is going to be lots of 60s surf rock.’ This choice to release both as singles is understandable but I do wish we could’ve gotten at least one more or two more songs on the EP (this is only being said just because I know their unreleased songs like ‘Sunset Blvd’ and ‘Darling’ are sitting there begging to be released). I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt with this one though as it is their first EP which is a big milestone and shows how far they've come. I'm basically saying I'm proud of them which is gross.
Content-wise, we already know my thoughts on ‘Cadilac’ and ‘Kaden’s Van’ (if not you can go read my thoughts on them in previous posts) but let's get into ‘Sunset Garage’ and ‘Outta Their Minds’. ‘Sunset Garage’ almost gave me a heart attack the first time I saw it, I misread it as ‘Sunset Blvd’, one of their unreleased songs, but then got confused when I was NOT hearing ‘Sunset Blvd’. The way I would describe the song is you would hear it on the beach at one of those cabana hut bar things as you’re ordering a pina colada it’s like 11 am and you’re already kinda sunburnt. So basically the vibes are good. I’m a big fan of when they go towards the more 60s surf rock vibes in songs other than the plain 60s rock vibes, so if you’re on that surf rock wave (lol) then you would love ‘Sunset Garage'. I'm reminded of The Beach Boys specifically with the background vocals during the chorus and the same background vocals leading into the end paired with the guitar, it’s nostalgic in a way even though I am literally 21 and not 80. So it logistically cannot be nostalgic. But you know what I mean. Hopefully.
Now there’s a full 180 from ‘Sunset Garage’ to ‘Outta Their Minds’ just because in my head they are really hitting two different genres. ‘Outta Their Minds’ starts with some solid bass lines giving you that kinda head nodding vibe that bassists tend to do. You're then thrown right into the guitar and drums. The best part of the song for me is in the middle when it’s just a mess (in a good way I promise) of instruments going at it. When compared to the structured beat of the song it allows me to dig way deeper than needed to assume it’s showing how they’re…. outta their minds. Bam. Full circle.
The EP is a great start for Sun Room and I hope in the future we get a studio version of ‘Sunset Blvd’ because that song makes me feel like I’m in a 2000s coming-of-age movie and I just really need it on Spotify. Out of ‘Sunset Garage’ and ‘Outta Their Minds’ I would have to say ‘Sunset Garage’ comes out on top just because I’m a sucker for music that makes it ten degrees warmer outside. I am so excited to hear these new songs live which happens to be in two days at my Inhaler show in NYC then the one in Boston (I really won with getting to see Inhaler and Sun Room together, wild). Hopefully, we’ll get Kaden’s Van, Clementine, and Blitzkrieg Bop (fingers crossed for the last one).
So, see you guys for a new post next week! I’ll also be updating the Instagram all day Friday and Saturday about the Sunhaler tour, so be there <3.
