Why Seeing Wallows Is Worth-It

By Mia Zajac

The way I would describe attending a Wallows show is an out-of-body experience. Their stage presence is unmatched, and the band is incredibly charismatic with the ability to make every show different.

Cole, Dylan, and Braeden of Wallows

Wallows is an Indie-Rock band based out of Los Angeles California. The band is composed of Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston. They’ve had major hit songs like Are You Bored Yet? And Remember When both off of their first Album titled Nothing Happens released in March of 2019. The band was formed in 2011 and officially became Wallows in 2017 with the release of their EP titled Spring.

The band's discography

I attended their New Orleans show at The Orpheum Theater on October 9th, 2022, during their most recent tour for their sophomore album Tell Me That It’s Over. The energy outside of the venue at 3 am, the time the fans began to line up, was electric and didn’t fade an ounce as the day went on. I spoke to some veteran fans and got to see how the band has helped them in more ways than one. Some fans even had tattoos dedicated to songs that have helped them through hard times. When the tour busses arrived a group of fans traveled to the back of the venue and waited outside the back entrance. Their supporting band came out to take pictures with fans and talk. Even their bodyguard, Gabe, talked and took pictures with the girls. Eventually, Dylan and Cole came out and it was an extremely exciting moment to witness. It was Cole’s birthday, so fans were handing him presents and wishing him happy birthday, the boys were so respectful and thankful towards their admirers as they made their way to the venue. The fans were so kind to the boys and were genuinely dedicated to them, which showed. Likewise, the boys reciprocated those feelings easily.

Braeden came out four hours later to the faithful fans still waiting and took pictures with every single one, even though he had just woken up. The thing about the band Wallows is it’s refreshing to see humble artists succeed and still be faithful to their roots as well as the fans that have been helping them along the way. They tend to show this gratitude in little ways that ultimately add up. This is a constant pattern at any show of theirs either within the US or in Europe. Fans always have amazing times at the shows either by getting a drumstick, being personally handed a set list, being given the fan pick song, and even just attending. This makes them have the urge to go to even more shows and share Wallow's music with anyone they can.

To the naked eye, this can be chalked up to marketing, but after meeting the band and having conversations with some of them you see firsthand how genuine they are as this is their passion, not just a cash grab because they’re good at it. My experience at the NOLA show has surpassed any other concert I’ve been to; it has also helped me expose others to Wallows music like my family and friends. I am so excited to join Wallows on this Journey of theirs and hope others can begin to see how special the band truly is.

The setlist for the show of October 9th, 2022, in New Orleans

The next Wallows show I’ll be attending is in August and I’ll be traveling to the Hinterland Music Festival in Iowa to see their set.
