Hey everyone, welcome back to The Concert Corner. Please don’t mind my almost two-month long (ew) hiatus, I was working an internship in the middle of nowhere Massachusetts, and it actually destroyed all of my creative energy. BUT, I’m back at school where for some reason I’m never stressed so it’s easier to actually write. I know you guys missed me too (humble queen).
But you know who I missed? Miss Olivia Rodrigo, the early 2000’s aesthetic it-girl. I was OBSESSED with Sour when it came out and was lucky enough to attend her NYC show. I don’t care what people say about her. I am an Olivia defender 4 lyfe.
This new single of hers is INSANE. It’s addictive. The sound of her voice and the guitar riffs in the pre-chorus actually drive me crazy. I don’t know what she put into ‘bad idea right?’ but it was a really good idea, right?
Yes.
The beginning of the song encapsulates more of an 80s sound than the early 2000s I’ve been referencing. It sounds like something out of season 2 of Stranger Things, specifically ‘Dead End Justice’ by The Runaways. The catchy bass line for the whole song really seals that 80’s deal. This is an extremely fun song overall and my highlights are definitely the pre-chorus and the second verse.
The pre-chorus is a fun little head-bopping moment, the addictive ohs and backup vocals paired with the baseline was a great creative choice. I’ve seen some people compare it to the Fish Hooks TV show theme song and they’re right (go listen to it to understand what I’m referencing please), but that's not bad. I love that show.
Olivia with her friends; Tate Mcrae, Iris Apatow, and Madison Hu on set for the 'bad idea right?' music video
‘bad idea right?’ is the perfect fun late summer song you need right now.
The overall energy of it is like you’re having a post going out debriefing (if you understand this you understand this, if not I’m not the right blog for you. Jk please keep reading. Thank you). She really knows her audience and as a creator that is so important. There’s never a miss with Olivia and I love it. The most appealing part of this song is its relatability. Like yeah, it’s a bad idea but like? Ok? And? I’ll still see it through.
She really encapsulates the life of a 20-year-old teenage girl.
It’s an extremely fun song and brings back the Avril Lavigne 2000’s grunge pop-rock sound, a genre I really think Olivia excels in. Yes, I love her sad stuff but this fits her vibe and how she’s been branding herself more so than the sad HSMTS songs era.
Behind the scenes of the 'bad idea right?' music video
Now the apparently extremely controversial topic I want to address is people accusing her of stealing other's songs and sounds to make her music. Like let's be for real, this song sounds nothing like ‘7 Things I Hate About You’ by Miley Cyrus. Have any of you ever heard of BPM???? Tempo? Do we want her to not use drums next time or something? Symballess music it is I guess. I think people like to bring her down due to the whole 2020 ‘love triangle’ situation and that’s dumb. Give her credit where credit’s due, she’s a good artist and an extremely talented songwriter.
The stories she tells in all of her songs are always executed perfectly; it allows us to understand what’s happening, but we can also put pieces together to build the bigger picture. ‘bad idea right?’ does that just like her other songs but in a fun way.
Overall, I highly suggest giving ‘bad idea right?’ a listen. Make sure to keep an open mind and do not go into it with any preconceived notions, it’s different from most of her things, especially her previously released single ‘Vampire’.
love this
